A conversation with Momus on The Marketplace of Ideas this week

momusThis Thursday on The Marketplace of Ideas, Colin Marshall talks to Nick Currie, better known as Momus. Since the mid-1980s he has led parallel careers in music (with 21 albums out so far), prose, art and journalism, exploring the nexuses between them while traveling the world and examining his favorite cultures. He has most recently turned toward traditional ink-and-paper publishing with two volumes, The Book of Jokes and The Book of Scotlands. Since 2004, he has written the blog Click Opera on his life, work and art adventures, which he plans to close by February 11, 2010, his 50th birthday.

The Marketplace of Ideas airs every Thursday at noon.

UCSB’s MultiCultural Center, KCSB, & A.S. Program Board present dead prez on Thurs., Feb. 25th, 830pm in the UCen Hub

deadprezOn Thursday, February 25th, UCSB’s MultiCultural Center, KCSB 91.9 FM, and Associated Students Program Board present the underground hip-hop duo dead prez, live in concert at the University Center Hub at 8:30pm. Hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, emcees stic.man and M-1 produce music that challenges the status quo to rally against the inequities in American society – promoting such positions as critical pedagogy, anti-capitalism, and veganism — while taking inspiration from the lives and social activism of figures like Malcolm X and the political radicalism of the 1960s. In their song “I’m an African,” the group places itself “somewhere between NWA and Public Enemy.”

Openers are still TBA. This concert is open to all ages, with a beer garden open to attendees 21 and over. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 general admission, and are on sale now at UCSB’s Associated Students Ticket Office or by calling 805.893.2064. This event is co-sponsored by A.S. Finance Board.

DJ Darla Bea Smith’s Rock It Properly profiled in this week’s KCSBeat

djdarlabeathumb_r140x140In the newest edition of The KCSBeat, Colin Marshall’s Santa Barbara Independent column on the whos, whats and whys of KCSB, the highly-connected, SB-to-the-core DJ Darla Bea Smith and her show Rock It Properly get the profile treatment:

Smith’s penchant for rock knowledge pays off in her ability to craft every installment of Rock it Properly around a theme. Past shows have included “Wham, Bam, Thank You Glam” (a tribute to glam rock), “We Gotcha Covered” (nothing but covers) and “I See London, I See France” (I’m not sure, but it certainly sounds intriguing). Even when she had to drag herself into the studio and somehow remain awake for the 3-6 a.m. graveyard shift on her debut last summer, she still managed to adhere to Rock It Properly’s organizing principles.

Nevertheless, I couldn’t help but ask Smith, a KCSB listener since 1994, why it took her so many years to join the station. “I’m a Virgo,” she explained, “a perfectionist.” It seems the very perfectionism that drives her to produce such a prepared, information-rich program also prevented her from doing so for quite some time. “When I was at UCSB, I was just focused on graduating,” she said, “and when I do something, I want to really do it.” And do it she certainly has, with all of the concentration the big-time FM DJs of old used to put into their broadcasts. As guest Spencer Barnitz of Santa Barbara “Latin big-band spy movie” band Spencer the Gardener remarked, “Darla, your show is how radio can’t be anymore.”
